Is Drug Addiction Hereditary?

Question by dezzie: Is drug addiction hereditary?
Both my mom and sister are crack cocaine addicts. My moms mom was a alcoholic and my dads side had thier uses but not as severe. There is a part of me that does like to use. I fear that I will end up like my family. I have children and I dont want them to experience what I did as a child, or continue the cycle. Is it true that its hereditary and what can I do to avoid the inevitable if thats the case?

It is not. It is a choice. And a bad choice at that.

personally i believe that addiction is more dictated by lifestyle than by genetics.
