Depression Help?
Question by DarkMinded: Depression Help?
Ok i wanted to see if anyone here that is an expert or has hands on experience with depression could give me some advice…(like maybe even how they got through it)
I get depressed often enough its been a “BuRDeN”, Due to family and circumstantial issues…I have tryed talking it out lots of times, but it does not make anything better. I know what my problems are and why i am having them.(really can not fix much of them). i dont think a psychiatrist could do the trick (talking does not work)……I so don’t want to be doped up on drugs. I also dont think i could afford any professional help, I don’t have any insurrance/money to spare.
any suggestions on how to take care of this? or how anyone has relieved themselves of this?

If you so choose not to use therapy, or are unable to gain easy access to it, I would say to maybe give yourself a time-frame or milestones of self-improvement. Based on those results, you will be able to at a certain point re-assess the situation and decide if you want to change course and seek therapists, etc if indeed is possible.
Since you are saying there are specific problems that need to be fixed then your best cure may be attempting to fix those problems. You say you cannot fix many of them, but this would imply you can fix some of them. It would be logical to create a plan and stick to it relentlessly to fix the ones you can. The ones you cannot, accept that there is nothing more you can do and let it be as it is. Use the remaining energy you have to find alternative solutions to your distress.
It may include changing or adding new things to your life and seeing if they give you new perspectives. In a nutshell what therapists will do is help you gain new perspectives through reflecting your own thoughts and providing new insights – like what you’re getting on this forum but way more instant and probably way more professional 🙂
Secondly, what a therapist would be doing and what you could work on is mindfulness, and acceptence of what is. Meditation techniques, relaxation techniques can be very effective. Vigorous exercise for depression is proven to be incredibly effective and if you can exercise and are not already, that in and of itself is probably your “big cure”.
Try that first, set a reasonable time-goal and if its not working perhaps reconsider your options and see if therapy could be attained. If not, family doctors can also offer a certain degree of depression and anxiety counseling.
With regards to drugs. They are overused but useful in certain very dark very difficult cases for limited periods of time in conjunction with a broader strategy.

Good question…I am taking 40mg of prozac and it has changed my life. I have suffered from major depression for 20 years now and now that I started on a higher dosage I am feeling great. I also attend group meetings weekly.
